The courses offered: The Institute now offers 3 post-graduate courses in
Journalism.
1. Training in Print Journalism. There are two batches – one in the
morning and the other in the evening.
2. Training for Electronic Journalism,
covering TV, Radio, Web and Films.
3. A special course for senior citizens. Some
other relevant courses like Photo Journalism are being planned.
Post Graduate Diploma Course in Journalism (Print):
The Course: The Institute offers a one-year course for PG Diploma in Journalism. This
diploma is recognized by the Government of Kerala (Vide G.O. (P) No.275/80/GAD
dated 04/07/1980).
The syllabus, updated to meet the breathless speed with which technology changes the
way journalism moves, the method of instruction and examination etc are designed in
a meticulous manner with emphasis on the inculcation of an appropriate aptitude and
outlook needed for a career in journalism and communication.
Academic Year: The academic year begins in July-August and ends by June-July. There
will be a morning division and an evening one. A student can opt for either. The
medium of instruction is English- of course with special room for Malayalam.
Lectures and discussions will be held five days a week. Lecture classes are from 08.00
to 10.00 a.m. for the morning division, and 5.30 to 7.30 p.m. for the evening division.
There will be guest lectures by experts, workshops and seminars on Saturdays for
which the morning and evening divisions will be combined.
The students should have computer literacy and are required to work in simulated
news rooms and produce in-house journals. It is mandatory for every student to cover
at least two press conferences a week held at the Press Club and submit those reports
to the director in an assignment note book. There will be other writing assignments
too. Arrangements will be made for participating/covering/witnessing important
events in Trivandrum.
The final examination will be held in July-August. A mid-term examination will also be
conducted. Those who fail in more than half of the papers in the mid-term examination
will not be admitted to the final examination.
Admission: Minimum academic qualification for admission to the DJ course is a
bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. The upper age limit is 28 years.

Rs. 250 or Rs. 300 by Money Order / Demand Draft in favour of the Secretary, Press
Club, Thiruvananthapuram.
The duly filled application form should reach the Secretary, Press Club,
Thiruvananthapuram 695001 by the specified date in admission notices.
Candidates who satisfy the requirements in the preliminary screening will be called for
an entrance test. Those who secure a place in the rank list will be called for an
interview and final selection.
Fees: The fees for the course, Rs. 25,000 is payable in three installments. This amount
includes admission fee, tuition fee, library fee, lab journal fee, registration fee for the
examination and the examination fee.
The first installment of Rs 15,000 should be paid at the time of admission and the
balance in two installments of Rs. 5,000 each by mid-January and mid-May respectively.
Belated remittance will attract fine.
Full fee concession will be given for one SC/ST student. A couple of Scholarships are
also available for eligible students.
Examination: The final examination will be in July-August, unless notified
otherwise. The scheme of the final examination will be as follows:

institute as well as the Press Club is required of all students. In all matters
pertaining to attendance, practical assignments and the general conduct of the
students, the decision taken by the Director of the Institute shall be final
Awards: The following awards have been instituted for the best students:
− K. Sukumaran Memorial Gold Medal,
instituted by Kerala Kaumudi, for the student who scores the highest marks in
Reporting.
− K.M. Cherian Memorial Gold Medal
instituted By Malayala Manorama, for the student who scores the highest marks in
Editing.
− Krishna Mohan Memorial Gold
Medal, instituted by Mathrubhumi, for the student who scores the highest
aggregate marks.
− A.K. Bhaskar Memorial Cash Award,
instituted by the family of the late Bhaskar, for the student who scores the
highest marks for practical.
− N. Kesavan Nair Memorial Cash Award, instituted by the family of the late
N.Kesavan Nair for the best writer based on the total marks scored in reporting
and editing papers.
− K.C. John Memorial cash award for the best writer.
− E.A. Fernandez Memorial Cash award for the winner of a writing competition.
PG Diploma Course in Electronic Journalism
Various surveys and assessments have shown that there is ample scope for trained
personnel in electronic Journalism. In fact, many vacancies go abegging in this
vast expanding field because of shortage of trained personnel.
To exploit this situation, especially in the context of the advent of several TV
channels, the institute offers a one-year course in electronic journalism.The
maximum enrollment will be 30 students.
Basic qualification: A degree in any discipline. With reasonable command
in English/Malayalam and good communication skills and of age below 28 years.

the balance Rs 20,000 is to be paid in two equal installments, Rs 10,000 each.
One by mid- January and the other mid-May. Belated remittance will attract fine.
Selection Procedure: Those found suitable in preliminary screening
(fulfilling the criteria of educational qualification, age, etc.) will have to
write an Entrance Examination to test their aptitude for language, writing skill
and knowledge of current affairs. Those who find place in the Rank List will be
required to undergo an audition test before they are admitted.
Duration of classes: Lecture and practical classes will be held from 8.30
a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. There will be special classes, guest
lectures and practical as notified from time to time. Each student has to make a
diploma film making use of the Institute’s movie cameras and recording and
editing studio etc.
