There is a growing demand for trained journalists in various media such as newspapers, radio, television, advertising and communication network and online publications. There is a shortage of trained personnel to meet this ever-increasing demand.
PGDJ Course
This Institute offers a one-year course for Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism recognized by the Government of Kerala (Vide G.O. (P) No 275/80/GAD dated 04.07.1980)
OBJECTIVES
The main objective of the Institute of Journalism is to impart professional training to aspiring candidates to make them readily acceptable to any media establishment.
The curriculum, the method of instruction, the examination, etc.are designed in a professional way with emphasis on the inculcation of an appropriate aptitude and outlook in the students for a career in journalism and communication.
MANAGEMENT
The management of the Institute is vested in the Managing Committee of the Press Club, elected by the members of the Club who are working journalists and other media persons.
A Director who is responsible for its general day-to-day administration, training programmes, conduct of examinations, certification of achievements etc heads the Institute.

ACADEMIC YEAR
Academic year begins in August - September and ends by July - August . There will be a morning session and an evening session . A student can opt for either.
Lectures and discussions will be held five days a week. Classes are from 08.00 a.m to 10.00 a.m. for the morning session and 05.30 to 07.30 p.m for the evening session. There will be guest lectures by experts, workshops and seminars on Saturdays when the morning and evening classes will be combined.
The students will be required to work in simulated news rooms and produce inhouse journals. It is mandatory for every student to cover at least two press conferences in a week held in the Press Club and submit those reports to the director in an assignment note book.
The final DJ examination will be held in August . A mid term examination will also be conducted. Those who fail in more than half of the papers in the mid-term examination will not be admitted to the final examination.
ADMISSION
Minimum academic qualification for the admission to the DJ course is a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised University.
The upper age limit is 30 years
The medium of instruction is English
HOW TO APPLY
Prescribed application form together with the prospectus can be obtained from the Secretary, Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram - 695 001 on payment of Rs. 150/- or Rs. 200/- by money order / Demand Draft payable to the Secretary, Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram.
The duly filled application form should reach the Secretary, Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram 695001 by the date specified in the advertisement.
Candidates who satisfy the requirements in the preliminary screening will be called for an entrance test. Those who secure a place in the rank list will be called for an interview and final selection.

The fees for the course, Rs. 15,000 is payable in three instalments.

The first instalment of Rs. 8,000/- is payable at the time of admission and the balance Rs. 7,000/- in two instalments of Rs. 4,000/- and Rs. 3,000/- by mid- January and mid-May respectively. Belated remittance will attract fine.
FEE CONCESSIONS
Full fee concession will be given for one SC/ST student.
EXAMINATIONS
The final examination will commence in mid- August.
DIPLOMA AND MARK LIST
Students who complete the course successfully will be issued the Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (PGDJ) at convocation. On the basis of the marks list will be prepared and copies of individual mark list will be issued.
